Title: Anticandidal activity of essential oil of Putranjiva roxburgii fruit
Abstract:
Candida albicans is opportunistic pathogen which causes life threatening disease candidiasis in living beings. Due to incessant use of antibiotics, the cure of candidiasis is problematic and need alternative medicine. Medicinal plants have been used to treat skin infection Since antiquity. Putranjiva roxburgii belongs to Euphorbiaceae family is that grown abundantly in Asian tropical regions. In Ayurveda, this plant is used for the for the treatment of eye disorders, burning sensation, elephantiasis, difficulty in micturition, azoospermia and habitual abortions. In this study, the essential oil was extracted from fruits of Putranjiva roxburgii, and was evaluated it for anticandidal activity using disc diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of essential oil calculated using almar blue dye was 0.5%. the sub-mic concentration was found to be effective on hyphal formation of candida albiancs. This study proved that essential oil of Putranjiva roxburgii fruit could be used to treat candidiasis.
