Dear congress visitors, it is an honor and pleasure to welcome you to ECBB 2024. Impressive progress in Biotechnology – gene editing, for example -- have revolutionized the prospects of plant breeding. It’s now realistic to look forward to developing crops that can adapt to climate change and have higher yields. Also, directed, and rational methods are now within reach to greatly diminish crop pests. Once favorable changes are achieved, they are likely to prevail, as has been the case through evolution. These changes will also aim at facilitating organic farming compatible with biodiversity. The capability of achieving desirable changes in crops, resulting in Precision Agriculture, promises a new world of food sufficiency without deleterious environmental consequences.

Let me be the first to welcome you to this unique Biotechnology and Bioengineering conference. At a time when it feels the world is getting it all wrong, come make new colleagues, push research boundaries, and forge a path to the future. Wrong social media posts about research. Conferences with the same old speakers and same old ideas. Research awards not going to innovation and pushing the most urgent boundaries in medicine, but instead going to those with the biggest personalities. Research that never makes it to the market to help real patients, now.  Professors increasingly suppressed to even go to conferences to share new and creative ideas. University Presidents making record salaries at the back of starving students. There is so much wrong in today’s research culture restricting us from solving major healthcare crises.  We need to remove boundaries, not create new ones!
Well, take it back. It is our research. It is our ideas. Come to smaller more interactive conferences where everyone gets a chance to present. Everyone gets heard. Stay away from the egos and negative attitudes. Come to conferences where everyone interacts and gets the chance to make new colleagues. Everyone gets awarded.
At a time when global life expectancy is going down, we need you and your ideas more than ever. We need to increase participation in healthcare research, not restrict it.
So come to this conference. Start new and fresh with ideas that will make a difference in healthcare. We need you!
