Title: GGM-Guar gum-based films as biodegradable biomaterial

Abstract:

Applications for GGM-based films was the objective of this study aimed to argue our choice concerning GGMs as a potential renewable and biodegradable film forming material, requiring a rather cross linked material based guar gum to form cohesive films for food packaging application with higher functional quality.

GGMs are potential renewable and biodegradable film forming material, but require a rather large amount of plasticizer to form cohesive films, and the mechanical performance of the highly plasticized GGM films is rather low. The property of oxygen permeation is crucial for biomaterials in food packaging. The lack of oxygen in a packaging reduces or diminishes the function of microbes in the food.

The oxygen permeability (OP) and oxygen transmission rate (OTR) were determined from two replicates at 23 °C and at 50% relative humidity (RH). The GGM-based films hold potential as oxygen barrier materials, although only in the presence of a plasticizer. Despite crosslinking of GGM with glyoxal, the studied films are still expected to be biodegradable. As expected, the experimental results indicated that the GGM/Guar gum based films can be used as part of the raw material for films with good oxygen barrier properties and higher functional quality.

Key words : Films, GGM, Guar Gum, OP, RH.
